Interested in the internal struggles that accompany survival and growth, RED is an exploration of the ways in which people negotiate the fine line between self-love and self-hate. I projected a video of me spitting red-dyed saliva onto the floor and choreographed my movements and poses in relation to where the splatters landed. Audience members often asked: Is she moving away from or towards the spit? Ambiguity provided an intentional and key element to the piece, as viewers’ assumptions about my relationship to the spit served as mirror for their own perceptions of self-degradation and self-love. Referencing Pollock, Klein, and a predominantly white, male art canon, RED questioned the artist’s control, hijacking the gesture of throwing paint, while challenging the use of the female body in art.
